Hiroshima Peace Day Arrangement

Picture
The Hiroshima Peace Day Memorial Service was conducted in Melbourne in St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral; this year marked the 70th Anniversary. To help commemorate this event and pray for ever lasting world peace, I was asked to put together an Ikebana arrangement as part of Ikebana International.
In order to utilise the large space within the cathedral, I used very large pieces and large vase in order to maximise the presence of my arrangement. The materials that I used were:
  • 2.4m Magnolia branch
  • King Proteas
  • Calla lilies
  • Chrysathemums
  • Camelia leaves
In order to evoke a peaceful feeling to reflect the occasion, I used flowers that are typical of early Spring in Melbourne. I consciously chose pieces which were subdued in colour yet light in order to contrast with the dim light in the Cathedral and to not overshadow the event. The style that I used in order to put this arrangement together is called Nageire.

There were a number of ladies who were watching put together my arrangement, they were the Flower Guild of the Church and these ladies are responsible for the weekly flower arrangements in the Cathedral.
