The New Year Day in Japan is the most celebrated national and religious holiday. The old year will clear away the bad memories and the new year will invite hope and good fortune. Prayers are offered to Gods and Buddha at the shrines and temples. It is also a time to get together with family and friends. It is an old belief in Japan that the gods visit the human community between the end of the old year and the first of the new year. The pine was a dwelling place for the gods and places where pine trees grow had a holly feeling. That's why the pine branches are used in the New Year decoration.
